Break bulk refers to cargo of usually larger in sizes and dimensions that does not fit in standard containers and must be separately loaded, unloaded, and handled.
This type of cargo consists of anything from large wooden crates to pallets or drums that are too big for a container. It is typically larger than conventional cargo such as bags or boxes and requires special handling during loading, transport, and unloading.
Break bulk usually involves cranes or forklifts being used to move the items into place for them to fit onto a ship’s deck safely.
